Ficus 'Flash' (Ficus microcarpa 'Flash')
Dense. Architectural. Evergreen.
A premium hedging plant prized for its dense growth, glossy green foliage and beautifully clean appearance. Ficus 'Flash' forms a thick, highly effective privacy screen and responds exceptionally well to regular clipping, making it ideal for creating crisp, structured hedges.
Its smaller leaves and naturally dense habit give it a more refined appearance than larger-leaf hedges, making it particularly suited to contemporary homes, pools, courtyards and formal landscapes.
BEST FOR
Privacy • Screening • Formal hedges • Contemporary gardens • Poolside planting
HEDGE HEIGHT
Best maintained at 1.5–4m
Can grow considerably taller if left unpruned
HEDGE WIDTH
Best maintained at approximately 60cm–1.5m depending on desired height and screening density
SPACING
80–100cm apart for a dense hedge
Closer spacing can provide faster initial screening
GROWTH RATE
Fast
Approximately 50–100cm per year in warm, favourable conditions
SUN
Full sun to part shade
CLIMATE
Warm temperate to subtropical
Best suited to warm, protected locations
FROST TOLERANCE
Low
Sensitive to frost, particularly when young. Avoid exposed sites and areas that experience regular or severe frost.
SOIL
Adaptable to a range of soil types
Best in fertile, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter
WATER
Moderate
Water regularly while establishing. Once established, Ficus is relatively resilient, although consistent deep watering during hot and dry periods encourages lush, healthy growth.
MAINTENANCE
Moderate
Trim regularly during the growing season to maintain a dense, defined hedge. Its vigorous growth and excellent response to pruning make it particularly suitable for highly manicured hedges.
EVERGREEN
Yes
BLOOMFIELD TIP
Ficus 'Flash' is one of our favourite choices for creating a dense, architectural hedge, but location matters. Plant it in a warm, protected position and avoid frost-prone sites. Regular light trimming from a young age will encourage dense branching and create a beautifully full hedge from top to bottom.
